ShipStation - Enable API Access

Karl Falconer · Updated

This article is for whoever connects a ShipStation account inside DropStream — a fulfillment provider (3PL) or a merchant who manages their own DropStream account. You’ll add the store through DropStream’s Add Connection wizard. If a fulfillment provider is setting up DropStream for you, you don’t need this page — just gather your ShipStation API credentials and send them over.

What you’ll need

How DropStream connects to ShipStation

Every store connects through the same Add Connection wizard. For the full walkthrough of the wizard’s four steps, see Add a Connection. This article covers only the Store Setup step, where you enter the ShipStation-specific details.

Enter your ShipStation details

  1. In the Add Connection wizard, work through to the Store Setup step. Choose Create new store, give the store a Name, and select ShipStation as the Platform. The ShipStation credential fields appear below.

  2. Enter your credentials:

    Field What it is Example
API Key Your ShipStation API key xxxxxxxx
API Secret Your ShipStation API secret ••••••••

For where to find each value, see Get Your API Credentials.

  3. (Optional) Adjust the import settings:

    • Partner Key — optional Partner API Key from ShipStation support; raises the ShipStation API rate limit.
    • Use Original Request Shipping Description — use the original shopping-cart shipping description instead of the ShipStation-translated one. Default: off.
    • Notify Customer — send a ShipStation shipment notification email to the customer after it is posted. Default: off.
    • Notify Sales Channel — notify the DropStream sales channel that shipping info was uploaded to ShipStation. Default: on.
    • Order Tags — only import orders that carry these tags.
    • Order Acknowledgement Tag — tag applied to an order after import. Must not equal an Order Import Tag.
    • Exclude Empty Orders — skip orders with no line items. Default: off.
    • SKU Configuration — which field the SKU is pulled from: Auto (default), Product Sku, or Fulfillment Sku.
    • Accept Orders After — only import orders created after this date. Default: 5 days before the connection is created.
  4. Click Add connection.

Notes

  • The Order Acknowledgement Tag must not also be set as an Order Import Tag.
  • Tags are listed only after the connection is authorized.
