Magento - Including Tracking Numbers In Shipment Emails

Sending tracking numbers back to Magento via the API is a 2-step process. First a Shipment is created for an order, then tracking numbers are added to the newly created Shipment. By default, Magento will send out an e-mail notification to the customer after the Shipment is created, but before the tracking numbers have been added. The default end result is that the customer receives an e-mail notification which does not include a tracking number.

Including Tracking Numbers in Shipment Emails for Magento

DropStream provides an enhancement to the default settings allowing tracking numbers to be sent in shipment emails for Magento. To include tracking numbers in shipment emails from Magento, the following steps are required:
    
  1. Creating a New Email Template for Shipment Updates
  2. Swapping Email Templates

Creating a New Email Template for Shipment Updates

To create a new template:
   
  1. Login to the Magento administration panel

  2. Click System > Templates > Transactional Emails

  3. Click the Add New Template button

  4. Under the Load default template heading, select New Shipment from the Template list, then click the Load Template button

  5. Under the Template Information heading give the template a unique name in the Template Name box. (Example: Shipment Update With Tracking Number)

  6. Click the Save Template button


     

  7. Repeat Steps 3-6 with the Template named New Shipment for Guest



Swapping Email Templates

To swap email templates:
   
  1. ​Login to the Magento administration panel

  2. Click System > Configuration

  3. Under the Sales heading, click Sales Emails

  4. Expand the Shipment email configuration, set Enabled to No

  5. Expand the Shipment Comments email configuration, set Enabled to Yes

  6. Set Shipment Comment Email Template to the Template Name previously created

  7. Set Shipment Comment Email Template for Guest to the Template Name previously created


     

  8. Click the Save Config button



Note: When tracking numbers are pushed to your Magento store, the customer will receive one shipment notification which will include all tracking numbers.
